City of Toronto reminds residents about its level of snow clearing service

With a sizeable snowfall expected over the next few days, the City of Toronto is reminding residents and businesses about the levels of snow clearing the City provides.

Large snowfalls require a coordinated approach by the City’s staff and contractors to ensure that City streets and sidewalks are safe.

As soon as the snow begins, Transportation Services sends out its fleet of salt trucks to the expressways and the main roads.  After this, the salt trucks will then move on to the local roads.  If the City receives five centimetres of snow, the plows are sent to the expressways and main roads and plowing will take place for the duration of the storm.

When the snow stops and if the snow accumulation reaches eight centimetres, plows will be sent to the local roads.  Normally, local road plowing will be completed between 14 and 16 hours after the storm has ended.

The City will clear snow from sidewalks on local roads where it is mechanically possible to do so after eight centimetres (five centimetres in January and February) of snow has fallen.  In the central core of the city, property owners are required to clear their sidewalks of snow 12 hours after a storm has taken place.   To learn more about sidewalk snow clearing in Toronto and to view a map of where the service takes place, click on http://www.toronto.ca/transportation/snow.

The City of Toronto’s levels of service for snow clearing meet or exceed those set by the Province of Ontario for municipalities and road authorities.  These levels of service were adopted by Toronto City Council in 2009.

Residents who have questions about snow clearing efforts in their area can call 311.

The City has 600 snow plows, 300 sidewalk plows and 200 salt trucks ready to tackle the winter season.

For information about non-emergency City services and programs, Toronto residents, businesses and visitors can dial 311, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Family Skate Night

Catch the Olympic Fever!
Family Skate Night at North Toronto
Memorial Community Centre

On Friday, February 19th, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., please join me and my family at the outdoor skating rink at North Toronto Memorial Community Centre for a celebration of our Olympic athletes.  Put on your favourite Olympic wear, have a skate, a hot chocolate and take a minute to sign our “Go Canada Go” banner.

This banner, which will be shipped directly to our Olympic athletes in Vancouver in their final week of the games, is a great way for you and your family to share your thoughts and best wishes for Team Canada.  Tell our athletes they’re great! Tell them you’re proud! Tell them you’re rooting for them!

Catch the Olympic Fever and have some fun!

Hope to see you on the 19th!

*As this is an outdoor event, it will only take place if ice conditions permit.  In the event of a cancellation, a notice will be posted on my website (www.karenstintz.com) or please call my office for information at 416-392-4090.

Ward 16 Can the Trash Contest

As you may recall, we launched the ‘Can the Trash’ Contest in January of this year. We invited all students attending school in Ward 16, from Grades 1 to 12, to participate. Students were asked to prepare a submission on the subject of littering, graffiti or the environment in general. To communicate their thoughts, students could develop an illustration, write a poem or draft an essay.

The response was outstanding.

We received over 100 submissions, with an entry from every Grade. What is so striking is how insightful the students were in communicating their thoughts about these matters. Moreover, the effort they put into their work and their creativity was truly impressive.

A panel of judges, including artist/environmentalist, Franke James and former advertising executive, Judy Paradi, are selecting a winner from each Grade. In collaboration with participating schools and our local BIAs, we will announce our winners and present awards in late May/early June. The work of the winners will be displayed in a calendar that will be distributed through our schools and local businesses.

New Recycling Items for Blue Bin

Starting December 9th, residents can add plastic grocery and retail bags and foam polystyrene packaging to their recycling.

Plastic grocery and retail bags without drawstrings, metal detailing or hard plastic handles are accepted. Remove receipts. Place all plastic bags in one grocery or retail bag and tie handles together. The following bags are not included: dry cleaning, milk (outer and inner), produce, bread, sandwich and plastic food wrap.

Foam polystyrene packaging includes foam protective packaging, foam meat trays, foam takeout food containers, foam plates, foam egg cartons and foam coffee cups. All food residue must be removed. Packing chips (e.g., “peanuts”) are not accepted in the Blue Bin.
Residents will be informed through a newspaper advertising campaign in daily, community and ethnic papers (see samples in the attached PDFs). Mall and transit shelter posters will be displayed across the city throughout the month of December.  Information is also posted at:  www.toronto.ca/recycle
